DIY Winter Wreath – Easy Upcycled Wreath

Reuse an old scarf to make this winter wreath that can be kept up past the holiday season into the late winter months of the year.

I love this project because it reuses an old item and it is SO easy to make. I love it so much that I’ve actually made three different variations of this DIY winter wreath.

Hmmm, that sure does sound a little weird, but I guess I can’t pass up the perfect scarf to make into a wreath perfect for those winter months. It’s an easy DIY wreath that costs less than $5 to make!

Supplies Needed for Scarf Winter Wreath

  • old scarf
  • wreath form (Dollar Tree has wire ones for $1.25)
  • white yarn
  • fork
  • scissors
  • hot glue
scarves from the thrift store or goodwill can be reused to make a winter wreath

First, you’ll need to find a scarf (the longer the better here) that has wintery colors. I lean towards blues, grays and neutral plaids, but you could use any scarf that catches your eye! Check out your local thrift store before buying a new wreath as you are sure to find a scarf that will work for this project.

You’ll also need to find or buy a wreath form. I’ve used an old straw wreath I found at the thrift store and a wreath form from Dollar Tree and both worked well for this winter wreath. A foam wreath form would also work really well too.

A note on wreath form size: I used the medium sized wreath from from Dollar Tree (14.5″ in diameter) and a medium sized straw wreath (13″ in diameter). You would need to find an extremely long wreath to cover anything larger. However, you could easily join together two different wreaths if you wanted a larger wreath!

The only other supply you may need to buy is some white yarn to make the pom poms. You can also use twine or cotton string.

How to Make the Winter Wreath

Start by folding the wreath in half. Then, wrap each side around the wreath until the ends meet at the bottom. At this point, you may find that your wreath is too short. I’ve found I’m able to add a few more inches by wrapping it again, this time stretching the fabric and wrapping it tightly. Once you have enough of the scarf at the end, tie the two tails together with one knot.

How to Make Yarn Pom Poms

You could easily stop at this step and just hang up your scarf wreath as is! I chose to make a few pom poms from white yarn to add just a little more to the wreath. My thought was that the pom poms would look like little snowballs on the wreath.

make different sized pom poms with a fork

To make a pom pom, take a 6 inch length of yarn and hang it in between the middle tines of a fork. Then, wrap another piece of yarn around the tines of the fork. The more you wrap, the thicker the pom pom will be. But don’t wrap too much as it will be hard to tie in the next step. After wrapping, use the 6 inch yarn and tie it around the center of the wrapped yarn.

Then, use a sharp pair of scissors to cut the yarn on both sides of the fork. Trim away the ends all the way around to make the pom pom ball.

Add Pom Poms to the Wreath and Hang

Use hot glue to glue the pom poms to the scarf wreath. Then, glue ribbon, twine, or any other piece of fabric to hang the wreath.

Here are a few variations of this DIY winter wreath I’ve made. I used snowflake stickers instead of pom poms and have used two different types of scarves to make these wreaths.

I’ve also used pom poms to make this easy DIY Valentines garland with yarn wrapped hearts and pom poms. I’m all about decorating throughout the year by reusing, thrifting and crafting! You can see all my upcycled and DIY holiday projects here.

Since we’re talking about inexpensive wreath ideas, here are the other strange ways I’ve decorated my front door for different holidays.

    1. Thanks! You should make a wreath using one of your extra scarfs! The nice thing is that if you change your mind, it’s only attached with a knot.

  1. Love this. It looks so homey and cuddly, someone might just decide to “lift it!” Love the blue color and the snowflakes! I will have to try this!
